Masdevallia macropus is a medium sized epiphyte that also has a terrestrial growth habit in wet tropical climates. It is found in south-east and south Ecuador at elevations of 2600 to 3000 metres within cold wet cloud forests on scrubby mossy trees and in loose humus. Blooming occurs in summer.
