Masdevallia mutica is a miniature epiphyte first described in 1978. It occurs in the El Choco' and Valle de Cauca departments of west Colombia at elevations of 2000 to 2300 metres in wet tropical conditions and prefers cold temperatures. The species blooms in fall, winter and spring.
