Paphiopedilum orchids

Paphiopedilum is the "Asian slipper orchid", distinguished by its pouch-shaped lip that functions as a pollinator trap. The genus is native to Southeast Asia, southern China, India, and parts of New Guinea, where species range from leaf-litter terrestrials to lithophytes growing on limestone cliffs. Flowers are typically solitary, long-lasting (six to ten weeks is common), and carried one per stem.

Slipper orchids appeal to collectors who like character over flower-count. Mottled-leaf Maudiae-type hybrids bloom reliably in household conditions, while more demanding species like Paphiopedilum rothschildianum and the multiflorals reward serious growers with dramatic spikes.

General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): medium light (1,000 to 1,500 footcandles), no direct sun, intermediate temperatures for most hybrids (nights 13 to 18 °C), evenly moist medium that never goes bone dry, 50 to 60 percent humidity. Medium-grade fir bark with a little added perlite suits most plants.

Notable species include Paphiopedilum delenatii, Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, Paphiopedilum sukhakulii, and Paphiopedilum malipoense. Maudiae-type complex hybrids descended from Paphiopedilum callosum and related parents are the standard beginner choice.
