Phalaenopsis japonica is a small epiphytic subshrub from open subtropical forests or cliffs along valleys at 600 to 1400 metres. Its native range covers parts of western Yunnan and Zhejiang in China, Jeollanam-do in Korea, and southern Japan to the Nansei-shotō. The plant prefers cool temperatures and partial sun and blooms in spring and summer.
