Caucaea orchids

Caucaea species are pseudobulbous epiphytes from wet tropical areas. Their range extends from Colombia to Ecuador and includes parts of west South America and Venezuela. They occur at elevations of 2400 to 3500 metres. These plants favour cold to intermediate temperatures and grow to small or medium sizes. Most are fragrant. Blooming takes place mainly in fall, spring and winter.

Ten species are catalogued. Examples include Caucaea hirtzii, Caucaea macrotyle, Caucaea nubigena, Caucaea olivacea and Caucaea phalaenopsis.
