About Coelogyne
Coelogyne is an Asian genus of around two hundred species, distributed from the Himalayas across China, Southeast Asia, and into the Pacific. Plants produce distinct pseudobulbs, each bearing a pair of pleated leaves, and flower spikes that range from small clusters to long arching sprays. Flowers tend towards white and cream with contrasting throat markings, and many species are powerfully fragrant.
The genus is diverse in habitat preference. Some species come from cool cloud-forest elevations, others from lowland tropics, and care therefore varies significantly. Matching a species to the temperature range you can provide is essential.
General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): varies by species. Cool growers (like Coelogyne cristata) want nights down to 10 °C; intermediate species prefer around 15 °C nights. Bright indirect light (2,000 to 3,000 footcandles), regular watering during growth, a drier rest for cool growers. Medium fir bark, often with added sphagnum.
