Dactylorhiza orchids

Dactylorhiza are terrestrial tuberous geophytes of temperate climates. The species originate from Europe to Siberia and north Türkiye, north-west Africa, and extend to the west Himalaya and Mongolia. They grow at elevations of 3000 to 4100 metres. Typical plants are medium or miniature in size and favour cold to cool conditions. Flowering takes place in spring, late spring and summer.

Six species and three hybrids are catalogued. The example species are Dactylorhiza maculata, Dactylorhiza majalis, Dactylorhiza incarnata and Dactylorhiza hatagirea.
