Dracuvallia orchids

Dracuvallia is an intergeneric hybrid genus representing crosses between Dracula and Masdevallia. Both parent genera are Pleurothallid-alliance cool growers, and the hybrids combine their characteristics: the cool-tolerance of both, the pendulous flower habit of Dracula, and the broader colour range that comes from Masdevallia parentage. Hybrids tend to be easier to grow than pure Dracula species while retaining the unusual flower form that draws people to the genus.

The nothogenus name follows the standard convention of combining elements of the two parent names. Hybrids were first registered in the late twentieth century and remain a specialist interest for Pleurothallid enthusiasts.

General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): cool to intermediate temperatures (nights 10 to 15 °C, day maximum 22 °C), low to medium light (1,000 to 1,800 footcandles), very high humidity (75 to 90 percent), constant air movement, evenly moist fine bark or sphagnum medium. Basket culture so pendulous flowers can hang below.
