Eulophia orchids

Eulophia is a large pantropical genus of around two hundred species, distributed across Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas with the greatest diversity in Africa. Plants are predominantly terrestrial, growing from pseudobulbs or corms in open grassland, woodland, and scrub habitats, which makes them unusual among the predominantly epiphytic orchids of cultivation. Flower spikes are typically tall and carry numerous small-to-medium flowers in yellows, greens, browns, and occasional whites.

Most Eulophia species are seasonal, growing and flowering in the wet season and going dormant in the dry season. They are rarely found in mainstream orchid commerce but circulate among specialist collectors of African terrestrials.

General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): varies by species. Most want a warm growing season with regular water and feeding, and a distinct dry dormancy. Medium to bright light, warm to intermediate temperatures, terrestrial potting mix (coarse bark with added perlite and soil), 50 to 70 percent humidity during growth.
