Leptotes orchids

Leptotes species are miniature rhizomatous epiphytes. They occur in Brazil from Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina and Bahia, extending to Paraguay and north-east Argentina. The typical climate is seasonally dry tropical or wet tropical. Plants grow at elevations from 500 to 1000 metres. Most species are fragrant. They favour intermediate to cool temperatures. Bloom seasons are winter, spring and fall.

Sixteen species are catalogued. Examples include Leptotes bicolor, Leptotes unicolor, Leptotes pohlitinocoi, Leptotes pauloensis and Leptotes bohnkiana. Five hybrids are catalogued, one example being Leptotes Pat Thurtle.
