Neofinetia orchids

Neofinetia is a small East Asian genus; many modern taxonomic treatments merge it into Vanda, which is why you will see the same plants listed under either name in current catalogues. The best-known species is Neofinetia falcata (or Vanda falcata under the newer classification), a compact monopodial epiphyte from Japan, Korea, and China. In Japan, Neofinetia has been cultivated for over four hundred years and holds a special place in orchid tradition, with named cultivars selected in the Edo period.

Cultivars are prized for subtle variations in leaf form, root colour, flower detail, and growth habit. Some hundred-year-old traditional cultivars still circulate in the Japanese market at significant premiums. The plant is compact, flowers reliably, and is remarkably tough for a tropical-looking orchid.

General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): bright light (2,500 to 3,500 footcandles), intermediate temperatures with a distinct cool winter rest (nights 8 to 12 °C), regular watering during growth, drier in winter. Traditional Japanese culture uses sphagnum moulded into a conical mound in a low pot, which is both functional and aesthetic. Western culture in bark baskets also works.
