Ornithocephalus orchids

Ornithocephalus species are epiphytic orchids from wet tropical and seasonally dry tropical climates. They occur from south Mexico to south Tropical America, with many recorded in Ecuador. Plants grow at elevations from 15 to 2000 metres. They are miniature to small in size and prefer intermediate to hot temperatures. Blooms appear mainly in spring, fall and summer.

Eighteen species and one hybrid are catalogued. Example species include Ornithocephalus gladiatus, Ornithocephalus cochleariformis, Ornithocephalus bryostachyus, Ornithocephalus ciliatus and Ornithocephalus ecuadorensis.
