About Restrepia
Restrepia is a Pleurothallid-alliance genus of around fifty species, native to the cloud forests of northern South America, with highest diversity in Colombia and Ecuador. Plants are compact, with single leaves on short stems, and produce long tubular flowers that hang against the back of each leaf. The flowers are small but intricately patterned with dots and stripes in reds, oranges, and yellows. Many species flower repeatedly through the year.
Like other Pleurothallids, Restrepias are cool growers that want moist humid conditions. They are small enough to fit in terrariums, which is how many growers keep them, and their eagerness to bloom in cultivation makes them favourites of miniature-orchid collectors.
General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): cool to intermediate temperatures (nights 12 to 16 °C), low to medium light (1,000 to 1,500 footcandles), high humidity (70 to 85 percent), evenly moist fine bark or sphagnum medium, good airflow. Small pots or baskets.
