Scaphyglottis orchids

Scaphyglottis plants are pseudobulbous epiphytes or geophytes that grow epiphytically or terrestrially. They occur from south-east Mexico to Tropical America, south Tropical America, Mexico to Central America, Ecuador, Bolivia, north Venezuela to Ecuador, Puerto Rico to north Venezuela, Panama to west South America and north Brazil, and Colombia. Climates are wet tropical or seasonally dry tropical. Elevations range from 100 to 2500 metres. Plants are medium or miniature. They prefer intermediate or hot temperatures. Main bloom seasons are spring, fall and winter.

Ten species are catalogued. Example species include Scaphyglottis prolifera, Scaphyglottis aurea, Scaphyglottis bicornis, Scaphyglottis boliviensis and Scaphyglottis graminifolia.
