Spathoglottis orchids

Spathoglottis species are pseudobulbous geophytes and epiphytes with a terrestrial growth habit. They originate from Tropical and Subtropical Asia to the Pacific, Bangladesh to Peninsula Malaysia, Borneo to the Philippines, Assam to west Malesia, south Indo-China to west New Guinea and Central and east Himalaya to south Tibet. These plants are medium or miniature in size and grow at elevations from 800 to 3650 metres. They favour wet tropical or temperate climates and intermediate or hot temperatures. Blooming occurs mainly in summer, spring and fall.

Fourteen species and twenty-four hybrids are catalogued. Examples of species are Spathoglottis plicata, Spathoglottis aurea, Spathoglottis kimballiana, Spathoglottis affinis and Spathoglottis gracilis. Registered hybrids include Spathoglottis Sheng Yi Rainbow, Spathoglottis Plicata Affinis Sp., Spathoglottis Plicata Var Alba Sp. and Spathoglottis Valerie Yamada Southwood.
