Zygopetalum orchids

Zygopetalum is a South American genus of around fifteen species, native mostly to Brazil. Plants produce large pseudobulbs with pleated strap-shaped leaves and arching flower spikes of medium-sized heavily fragrant blooms. The typical flower has green or brown-marked sepals and petals behind a broad white lip that is overlaid with bold purple veining, creating a distinctive patterned look. Many species have a hyacinth-like fragrance.

Zygopetalums are popular with growers who want an unusual flower and are willing to manage their watering carefully. They resent being truly wet for long but also punish dry periods with leaf-edge browning.

General care for the genus (species, hybrids and cultivars vary, so check with the grower for a specific plant): intermediate temperatures (nights 13 to 18 °C, day maximum 26 °C), medium to bright light (1,800 to 2,500 footcandles), moderate humidity (50 to 70 percent), consistent moisture without sogginess, good airflow. Medium fir bark with added perlite and some sphagnum. Water with pure (rain or RO) water when possible; Zygopetalums are sensitive to mineral buildup.
