Calanthe orchids

Plants of the genus Calanthe are pseudobulbous geophytes and epiphytes. They grow as terrestrials or epiphytes in wet tropical and temperate climates across south China, south Korea, Japan to Nansei-shotō, Tropical and Subtropical Asia to Madagascar and north Pakistan to temperate east Asia. Elevations range from 100 to 3600 metres. Plants are large or medium in size and prefer cool or intermediate temperatures. Most species are fragrant. Blooming occurs mainly in spring, fall and winter.

Twenty three species and eighteen hybrids are catalogued. Example species include Calanthe triplicata, Calanthe rosea, Calanthe biloba, Calanthe cardioglossa and Calanthe rubens. Registered hybrids include Calanthe Takane, Calanthe Cooksoniae - Buds, Calanthe Cooksoniae 3in and Calanthe GROUVILLE.
